In 2002, the 8th Ka Band Utilization Conference will be held in conjunction with the European Mobile/Personal Satcoms (EMPS) Conference, as in 1998, to explore the possible synergies between the multimedia and other services expected at Ka Band with the expansion of the capabilities of mobile systems through S-UMTS and T-UMTS.
Again this year the Conference is hosting the meeting of CEPIT, the international group of people and organizations involved in ITALSAT Propagation experiments, which will conclude this year the cycle of annual meetings with the tenth one.
The meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 25 PM in conjunction with the EXPRESS Group Meeting, coordinated by Thierry Marsault, leader at CELAR, France, for the propagation experiments with the French STENTOR satellite.
Moreover a special educational event is previeed on Linearization: "Reducing Distortion in Power Amplifiers at Microwave and Millimeter Frequencies" by Dr. Allen Katz, Linearizer Technology, Inc./The College of New Jersey, USA at the special rate of € 50,00.

The 8th Ka Band Utilization Conference Scope
|
|
From the time of the last conference, the economic downturn following the catastrophe of September 11 has caused the failure of the one global system under construction and delayed or redefined the remaining regional systems. It could be concluded, therefore, that Ka Band systems will never materialize.
Instead, we should look upon these events as necessary adjustments from the overly optimistic approach, born of the euphoria of the dotcom economy, taken by the satellite proponents in promoting the systems.
We believe that Ka Band satellite systems can still provide the optimum solution for the distribution of broadband signals to users everywhere in the world, but at a slower pace and when the appropriate applications have been developed and made available at an affordable price. GPS-aided navigation is a killer application for which Ka Band is a natural, when coupled with the provision of broadband communications and entertainment to mobile platforms, especially aircraft.
In this application, Ka Band systems can provide large clear sky bandwidth in flight to meet the essential needs of the cabin and the entertainment and communications needs of the passengers, and then scale back to the needs of the cabin on the ground and during take off and landing, thus maintaining good link margins at constant power.
Other advantages of Ka Band for this application are the small size and low weight of the hardware and the global frequency allocations.
In view of the above considerations, we are adding navigation as a new topic for the conference, and are soliciting papers covering all its aspects, from the problems of the existing systems, to the projections of required services, to systems designed to provide the services, to hardware and software that can be employed for this purpose.
We will continue, of course, with the traditional topics and are therefore soliciting papers in the following areas:
